Let’s begin…. There was rum!
*Katherine, what is the working title of your next book?
THE ROGUE’S PRIZE, of course. What else? Shipped via Crimson Romance, it should be reaching our horizon 6/24/13
*Are there little Jack Sparrows tweeting to your muse? If not, where did the ideas for your book come from?
Actually, I’ve been afflicted with Sparrow fever. THE ROGUE’S PRIZE is the second book in my Nelson’s Tea (Rogue) series. The second book in the series proves what happens when you fall in love with a character and they won’t let you kill them off. Instead, they insist on becoming the gooey/yummy inside of the rogue cookie, holding the series together. Captain Guffald, if you haven’t guessed, is über yummy!!!
*I’ve heard you think rum is yummy too. What genre does your book fall under?
Regency Historical romance, of course!
*This almost answers the question, if you could be a pirate… What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
This is such a great question because I rely on inspiration from celebrities/models for my characters, especially Cap’n Jack Sparrow. But for my series, Simon Baker (The Mentalist) is Captain Henry Guffald and Amanda Righetti (The Mentalist) is Lady Adele Seaton. I needed a redheaded woman with bravado to play my swashbuckling female pirate and Righetti’s Van Pelt has the height and credentials for Adele Seaton’s devil-may-care spirit. It goes without saying Baker’s Jane uses wit over brawn to win the day and that is exactly what Guffald does in THE ROGUE’S PRIZE.
*You are becalmed in balmy waters. (Hand flail) Regale us with a one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Determined to prove his allegiance to England, and circumvent a war, one man’s search for redemption pits him against the ultimate prize~a female pirate bent on saving her brother’s life.
*Who be captaining this project?
*How long did it take you to sail to that first horizon~the land of the first draft manuscript?
Aye, ’twas about four months, give or take a dead monkey.
*Are there more pirates out in these waters? What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Tar!!! These waters are infested with great pirates. I’d have to say Shana Galen’s THE ROGUE PIRATE’S BRIDE and Katharine Ashe’s CAPTURED BY A ROGUE LORD would be the most modern comparisons. But Fern Michaels CAPTIVE Series drew me to writing a story like this many, many years ago. Once you get a taste… a pirate is never a good thing to waste. <g>
*Have you ever been part of a secret society serving the crown? Who or what inspired you to write this book?
No secrets here. I’ve always been drawn to pirates and stories about the royal navy. When the idea for Nelson’s Tea came along, I knew I wanted a character similar to Captain Horatio Hornblower. Guffald’s name is an actual name I found in naval books from 1804-1810 and it’s also an homage to Ioan Gruffald who played Hornblower in the last BBC miniseries.
*Espionage, adventure, and prizes… What else about the book might pique the readers’ interests?
Aye, THE ROGUE’S PRIZE is Captain Horatio Hornblower meets Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Packed with captivating characters, swashbuckling sword fights, dramatic rescues, and sensual byplay, one man discovers it isn’t what you’ve done~but what you become. And the biggest prize of all~redemption~can’t be won without risking your heart.
