Grog Filled HourARR! Jack was promised rum if he interviewed FABulous Author Deborah O’Neill Cordes today. In lieu of answerin’ Jack’s questions however, Lady Deborah opted to feature Drajulal-kishah, the heroine of her new sci-fi tale, Alienne Mine, a Prequel to Dragon Dawn, to help raise the signal flag for her latest release! Double ARR!!!

Jack saunters across the quarterdeck with his usual swaggerin’, swashbucklin’ genius. Eyes wide, fingers wigglin’, he spies Alienne, takes a cautious step backwards, then manages a quick glance at his hand to be sure ol’ Davy Jones hasn’t cursed him with the black spot again.

“Well, that be a boon.”

Before him stands a woman unlike any mermaids or wenches he’s ever seen. At five foot ten inches tall, her face is devoid of the pox but similar to stunning women of his previous acquaintance. He wipes his eyes to be sure Tia Dalma hasn’t drugged him and then reopens them. Aye, the girl IS blue-green with glittering scales. Even stranger, she wears a silver trouser and shirt design unlike any known to wenches in his circle. While her rainbow-hued silken dreadlocks are a pleasant enough sight, somewhat similar to his own, her turquoise eyes and square pupils pin him to the deck.

Jack: Blinks then looks at Katherine. “Here’s to a fellow pickin’ up a livin’ when he’s not pillagin’ his weasely guts out.” He pulls out his rum flask and takes a healthy swig. “I see the wisdom in Lady Deborah sendin’ you to me. You’re obviously a cultured wench, new to these waters. That makes me wonder. What compass headin’ did you use?”

Alienne: “Greetings, Captain Jack Sparrow! Please call me Alienne, for my real name is difficult to pronounce. Besides, the name’s a bit too close for comfort to a certain character who drinks blood – something I would never do, as I have a fondness for fruit, vegetables… and beer.” She winks.

jack57bj0Jack: “Blood?” Frowns. “I prefer rum.” Shakes empty rum flask. “Blood,” he repeats to himself. “Beyond all peradventure, pirates spill blood but we don’t drink it. We refer to it. Od’s blood. Bloody hell.” Jack stumbles over to a barrel, reaches in and produces another flask. This one full. “Or toast. Here’s to a bloody shirt and the Brotherhood o’ the Coast.” Tips the flask to his lips. “But I digress. Do go on.”

Alienne: Nods and smiles. “As to your question, my compass has spun in many directions over time.  Long ago, I fought as a warlord in a galactic war. I was defeated, but granted a stay of execution and a life in exile. My starship sailed the heavens until I found Earth. My most recent goal has been to find my Chosen, someone who will become my companion –  and my love.

Jack: “I captain the Black Pearl and I was once held in prison and forced to escape in a coffin.” Grimaces, takes another swig then preens. After an experience like that – Jack examines Alienne – any woman is better than no woman at all, even if she doesn’t have breasts. “My tastes lean to various treasure. In particular, I’ve got pieces of eight in my pocket. Significant wealth, to be sure. If you could have eight pieces with you at all times, what would they be?”

Alienne: “Ah, Captain Jack!  You and I are kindred souls, in that I have great fun searching for sunken treasure. It’s how I pay for the things I teleport from the Earth – a way of whisking food and drink off the planet to my starship.  The last time I did this, I left a pearl in exchange for chocolate!”

Jack Sparrow And RumJack: “You would get along well with wenches in Tortuga.” Takes a swig in honor of their understandin’, as it were. “Given your fortunate proceedings and success, when did the wind take hold of your sails?”

Alienne: “I whispered about my life to my author friend Deborah around half an Earth year ago. She was looking at photos of beautiful eyes on a site called Pinterest.”

Jack: “Lady Katherine’s quick eye favors many such boards.”

Alienne: Grins. “Deborah found a picture that looked like me – the blue-green skin was a perfect match – and that’s when I said hello.”

article-0-0C227FD700000578-913_306x460Jack: “Your story sounds like mine and mine thine.” Laughs at the irony. Clears his throat and hopes mention of the Kraken doesn’t offend his guest. “Given our similarities, were there times the Kraken tried to pull ye down to Davy Jones Locker?” Her glistening turquoise scales make him fearful she might be the Kraken’s spawn. “If so, how’d ye escape?” She’d obviously found a way to do so and the information could prove useful the next time he tackles said beastie.

Alienne: “As I mentioned before, I was defeated in a war, but the victor gave me clemency. I don’t know why he did this, but in the future I plan to ask him.”

Jack: “Many people don’t understand how I survive.” Leans forward. “Sometimes I do it without any rum.”

Alienne: “I shall let you know what I find out in Deborah’s work-in-progress sequel.  Oh, and Deborah just whispered to me that she has tried to develop a thick hide in response to the Kraken. It doesn’t always work, and in that case, she’s apt to curse under her breath and toss back a chocolate martini. Ha!”

jack-sparrowJack: “A true adventurer has but two enemies — himself by reason of drink.” Alienne eyes his flask. Jack hides the rum. “And the Kraken who sinks the weary soul.” At Alienne’s nod, Jack feels emboldened to continue. “Which brings me to a very important question. During a broadside, what do you do to mend your sails? Hock and heave?”

Alienne: “I rely on my Chosen.” She points off to the side, where a tall, handsome astronaut stands. “Captain Jack, may I introduce Edward McAdams?”

Ed: Takes a step forward and extends his hand to Jack.

BlackSpot2Jack: Stares at extended hand then tips his head, curiously studying this new sort of pirate. Shakes hands then checks his for the black spot before wiping it on his coat. “What kind of sailor are you, Ed? A corsair? A roving commissioner? No? Has a celestial cat got your tongue?” Jack laughs then resumes conversation with Alienne. “Does me heart good to know you’re not alone in seeking fortune. ’Tis very noble of this odd fellow to share your exploits, is it not? But I have to ask. Eyes their strange effects. “Once the course for that coveted horizon had been charted, how long did it take ye to make port?

Alienne: “Deborah said it took around seven months from Alienne Mine’s inception to the release date of August 4, 2015.

Jack: Eyes Ed when the man examines his rum barrel. “Ahem. Pirates have a code, more like guidelines anyway.” Keep your hands of me rum. “What is your code, Alienne?

Alienne: “I just live my life and let Deborah tell the tale. There will be much more to come in her sequel, Dawn of Time.”

35782f774dad820e7359e819cf98f581-277x300Jack: “More?” Eyes Ed suspiciously. “Fortunes golden quest, eh? Ah, so I see the aim is for both of you to cruise for booty. Good plan that. If you’re ever in need of a sea-worthy captain, ye have only need to drop a cursed doubloon into the sea.” Consumed by laughter, Jack immediately quiets at Alienne and Ed’s clueless expressions. “Ah. Well, our interview must sadly come to an end. As usual, I leave you with one last question which commends me well.” Preens. “Who be your all-time pirate?” Eyes Ed, daring him to influence Alienne.

Alienne: “You, Mr. Sparrow!”

Jack: “Aye.” Saunters closer. “You have heard of me, luv.”

Alienne: “I adore your wit and… those awesome dreadlocks.” She touches her own and smiles, then bows to Jack. “Thank you for a wonderful interview, and my sincerest gratitude to Lady Katherine for hosting Deborah and me today.  I wish the humans reading this great joy and future prosperity. And now, Captain Jack, how about some of that rum you’re so fond of…?”

Jack: “Here’s to a bloody shirt and the Brotherhood o’ the Coast.”

She is the author of the sci-fi time travel novel, Dragon Dawn, Book One of the Dinosaurian Time Travel Series, and its prequel, Alienne Mine, which blends fields of study she loves in equal measure – Deborah holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology and a master’s degree in history. She is also the co-author of the Morgan O’Neill time travel novels. Deborah resides in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and two West Highland White Terriers, who, alas, are precocious terriers and therefore never white.

Jack: “Every tar what sets foot on a ship has a story. What story do you have to tell, Deborah?”
