Sailing in to share Author Jenna Jaxon’s cover reveal for her next release, Only A Seduction Will Do! Sound the cannons and raise the signal flag, me hearties.

Only A Seduction Will Do is the next book in Lady Jenna’s House of Pleasure Series. Set in Georgian England the book follows Jack Fitzwilliam, the Earl of Manning, and Miss Alethea Forsythe. (Readers met Jack in book one, Only Scandal Will Do, his sister Katarina Fitzwilliam’s story.) Those familiar with Alethea from the other books in the series will now get the chance to meet her and share her story.

Ready for the cover?

Drum roll, please . . .4 Only Seduction Will DoIn a vulnerable moment, Alethea Forsythe allows herself to be seduced by a married peer.  Now she is with child—and without recourse.  Her reputation will soon be in tatters and she will be forced to wed a stranger—unless she takes matters into her own hands.

When Jack Fitzwilliam, the Earl of Manning, is summoned from the House of Pleasure on a matter of importance, he hardly expects to receive a marriage proposal. He’s long been aware of Alethea’s infatuation with him, but at twenty-three, taking on an expectant bride is not in his plans.  Yet the desperation in the lady’s lovely eyes overrides his misgivings.

Alethea would not have believed it possible for a man to be too chivalrous. But though her new husband is perfectly amicable in public, he insists they maintain separate quarters. Desperate to possess his heart and prove herself a wife in every way, she boldly reaches out to Jack. And as their unexpected connection between silken sheets is tested by jealousy and misfortune, Jack must decide where honor ends…and true passion begins . . .

~ Excerpt ~

“Lord Manning, I must apologize for this cryptic summons, but I importuned my cousin to send to you upon a matter of utmost importance.” Miss Forsythe twisted her fingers together brutally, until Jack felt tied in knots.

“Utmost importance to your cousin, Miss Forsythe?”

“To me, Lord Manning. Although it will likely touch on both my cousin and her husband as well.” The woman avoided his eyes by moving swiftly toward Braeton. She grasped his arm and leaned toward him, her lips at his ear.

Braeton kept his voice low, though his face acted as an open book. At her first words, he scowled like a vengeful god.

Jack waited for the thunderbolt.

Shaking his head vigorously, the earl drew his brows down almost to his nose. “You will not—”

“My lord, you promised me earlier.” Miss Forsythe’s face had drawn into determined lines. Her voice lowered, power in her indomitable tone. “Do not renege on this, I beg of you.”

Dark brows still lowered, Braeton threw up his hands, paused to collect himself, then turned to Jack. “Miss Forsythe wishes a word with you, Lord Manning.” He shot an angry glance at the lady. “Alone.”

All Jack’s instincts for self-preservation leaped into high alert. Something ill was afoot and he doubted it would be to his liking one whit when it finally came out.

Miss Forsythe stood, demure for possibly the first time in her life, her gaze lowered, her hands clasped primly in front of her. The picture of an obedient woman. And as false as a Newgate penny, he’d be bound.

“I am certain anything Miss Forsythe has to say to me could be spoken in your presence, Braeton.” He shot a look of desperation at the earl. Had the girl conceived some sort of trap to spring on him, compromise him into marrying her? Jack stiffened, then for the first time since he had arrived, he relaxed. Even though unannounced, he was already betrothed. Miss Carlton had now saved him, it seemed. Quid pro quo.

“I believe my cousin wishes to ask a boon of you, Manning.” Braeton’s mouth twisted as though he’d bitten into a lemon. “I am aware of the nature of the request and agree she would want privacy to ask it. I won’t be far if you should need me.” Braeton bowed curtly and left.

More confused than ever, Jack turned his attention back to Miss Forsythe, who swayed slightly from side to side, fidgeting with a lace handkerchief she’d produced from somewhere. Did she expect their conversation to lead to tears?

“Won’t you please have seat, Lord Manning?” Miss Forsythe indicated the chair nearest the fire. She seated herself opposite him. Perched seemed a better word, on the edge of the brown leather chair. “I do thank you so much for attending me at such an inconvenient time.”

“No inconvenience in the least, Miss Forsythe,” Jack said waving a hand of dismissal. He settled back into the chair. “How may I be of service to you?”

She gripped her lace-edged handkerchief in one hand, the other clenched on the chair’s arm. Raising her chin, her deep blue eyes boring into his, she swallowed hard. “Would you marry me, Lord Manning?”

IMG_9662Jenna Jaxon is a multi-published author of historical romance in all time periods because, she says, “passion is timeless.”  She has been reading and writing historical romance since she was a teenager.  A romantic herself, Jenna has always loved a dark side to the genre, a twist, suspense, a surprise.  She tries to incorporate all of these elements into her own stories. She’s a theatre director when she’s not writing and lives in Gloucester, Virginia with her family, including two very vocal cats.

Jenna is a PAN member of Romance Writers of America as well as an active member of Chesapeake Romance Writers, her local chapter of RWA. She has three series currently available: The House of Pleasure, set in Georgian England, Handful of Hearts, set in Regency England, and Time Enough to Love, set in medieval England and France. This March Kensington Publishing will release the first book The Widows’ Club series, To Woo A Wicked Widow in both print and ebook.

She currently writes to support her chocolate habit.

Katherine here! I’ve been researching Georgian and Regency dogs for my September 7th book, The Mercenary Pirate, Heart of a Hero Series Book #10. In the book, my heroine’s father seeks admission to the ton through the advantageous marriages of his two children. Mr. Herding is a middle-aged man doing everything he can to live a gentile and luxurious life in Cornwall’s mining district. Life is hard there, a daunting trial for a mineral lord who has acquired financial wealth and has no way to flaunt it before his aristocratic counterparts. New money doesn’t award him social status.

So what does a self-made man living in the Georgian and Regency eras need on hand to attract lofty persons to his estate? He needs a great house, fashionable clothes, excellent liquor, and the ability to provide entertainment. Mr. Herding has all of those things, especially an excellent breed of hunting dog.

Hunting as well as attending dog fights was a popular activity in the Georgian and Regency eras.

The rest of my post is at Embracing Romance.

In the 1700s, a scandal erupted in the royal palaces of Denmark that began behind closed bedroom doors and ended in imprisonment and execution and upheaval when a love affair between a neglected wife and an ambitious doctor hurtled headlong into a political coup. It is far from a fairy tale and for the players in this story, there was to be no happily ever after.

Caroline Matilda by Francis CotesThe story began when Caroline Matilda of Great Britain, the youngest child of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, became betrothed to her cousin, King Christian VII of Denmark. Caroline had been raised in seclusion, a world away from the formal manners and customs of the court and she had little interest in royal life, preferring to devote herself to nature and equestrian pursuits.

Christian VII by Alexander RoslinCaroline Matilda’s quiet days ended at the age of 15 when the very reluctant princess traveled to Copenhagen to become Christian’s wife. Two years her senior and less than twelve months into his reign, Christian already enjoyed an eccentric reputation, though the full extent of his mental illness had yet to show itself. They were married at the Christiansborg Palace on 9 November 1766, and Caroline already found herself in a situation for which she was ill-prepared. Continue reading →

Pirate Language in Georgian, England via Historical Hussies!

I’m blogging at Historical Hussies today!

Writing historical romance is a gratifying experience that can oftentimes be difficult too. An author makes choices that help modern readers understand the way people spoke in historical times, but must also season the story with historical words that transport readers to that era. Which words to use and when to use them? Well… that’s a talent every writer must master. Fortunately, several books are available to help authors achieve storyline Zen.

the-pirate-primerMy go-to book for pirate jargon has always been THE PIRATE PRIMER by George Choundas. A fascinating book! A dash of ‘You’re wasting words’ and a smidgeon of ‘What maggot’s burrowing under your periwig?’ goes a long way. (Pirate!)

Most Regency authors tackle stories of the upper crust. Who doesn’t love daring and dashing dukes, marquises, or earls who champion the day? Even historical aristocrats spoke in gentleman’s code. Several of my favorites include ‘Banbury stories’ (falsehoods), ‘befogged’ (confused), ‘dicked in the nob’ (crazy), and ‘land a facer’ (punch in the face).

Read the rest of this great list of Georgian and pirate cant at Historical Hussies!

The Biggest Near-Disasters of Only A Mistress Will Do by Jenna Jaxon!

We’re in for a BIG treat today, me hearties! Author Jenna Jaxon is back to tell us about her latest release, ONLY A MISTRESS WILL DO!

Welcome, Lady Jenna!

Ahoy! I know I could read a book I’ve written (probably any other book as well) and no matter how many times I read the copy, I’ll find something new to change with each reading. Usually these are very minor—one space too many, a letter left off a word, a space needed between two words.

Back in October, when I was doing the final galley proofs for Only A Mistress Will Do, I ran into some truly major mistakes that could have been disastrous had I not caught them on the final round through the book. I fault no one but myself because we all read the manuscript numerous times and none of us caught these until the penultimate moment. (I won’t go back and read it again for fear I’ll find something else I missed and it’s too late!) Continue reading →

En Garde! Dueling History

MARCH 13, 2017

If you have read my first novel, Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy, then you know that a duel with swords takes place toward the end. Naturally, in order to present a realistic duel, or simply have a duel at all, I needed to research the hows and whys as pertinent during the Regency Era of England. In the process, I learned a ton about the history of dueling, so will share some of the highlights.

Let’s begin with etymology. The word duel comes from the Old Latin duellum, which translates as “war” but is also associated with the Latin duo meaning “two.” Evolving etymology shifted the meaning to a combat between two persons, the common definition.

Love it, Lady Sharon! Thank you!!!

Blessings,

Katherine

Harness My Sledge and A Life in the Georgian Court by Catherine Curzon!

Catherine Curzon is celebratin’ her US Release of Life in the Georgian Court and sharing a post about Emperor Peter II of Russia! Huzzah!!! Let’s all give her a hearty welcome, eh? 😉

Whilst writing life in the Georgian Court, I came across some twists that fiction writers might shy away from as that little bit too mawkish, and killing someone off on their wedding day is certainly one of those. Add to that the fact that the deceased would-be groom was all of fourteen years old and the stage is set for a story that is too grim to be true.

TsarPeterIIEmperor Peter II of Russia was a young man who packed a lot into his short life. The son of the exiled late Tsarevich Alexei and Princess Charlotte Christine of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Peter’s royal pedigree was cemented by the small matter that his grandfather was none other than the legendary Peter the Great. The young man had ruled Russia since the age of twelve yet it was not a responsibility he particularly relished, his childhood consumed by the duties of state with barely a moment for him to gather himself for the challenges that might one day lay ahead.

To make matters worse, Peter was not looking forward to his imminent wedding to Ekaterina Dolgorukova and nor was the eighteen year old bride particularly thrilled about the proposed match, in which neither bride nor groom had been allowed any say. However, an emperor needs an empress and with all arrangements set in place, the wedding was scheduled for January 1730. It is, of course, strange for a modern royal-watcher to imagine these marriages commissioned and carried out in childhood but such was the lot of the eighteenth century power brokers!

Lend me your eyes and ears, me hearties! Author Jenna Jaxon is aboard Le Bone today with a historical post about Regency gamblers AND her new release, HEART OF DESIRE, Handful of Hearts Book #2!

Happy Release Day, Lady Jenna!!! 🙂

White's Club

White’s Club. Illustration from Old and New London by Edward Walford (Cassell, c 1880).

During the Georgian and Regency periods, gambling became an almost respectable vice. Losing or winning vast sums was pretty much the norm in Regency circles, either at private parties, public assemblies such as Almack’s, gentlemen’s clubs (White’s was notorious for it,) or in gambling casinos called “gaming hells.” It was one of the few past times that both men and women could participate in together without censure.

People gambled on everything from cards to dice to horse races to more personal things like women or the outcome of a duel. White’s was famous for its betting book, where one young man wagered £3,000 on which of two raindrops would reach the end of a pane of glass first. Fortunes could be made or lost in only several hours’ play.
